Lost, Stolen or Destroyed Certificated Bonds

What you need to do

Single Ownership

  • Report a lost, stolen or destroyed bond by contacting Customer Service for Certificated Bonds. This will initiate the mandatory 120-day waiting period for matured and unmatured bond certificates. If you have your Customer ID, address at the time of purchase, along with the complete bond certificate serial number(s) and the exact name as it appears on the certificate, this will help to expedite the processing of your request.

    If the owner is under the age of maturity (18 years old), the parent or legal guardian must speak with a Customer Service representative.

Joint Ownership

  • All bond owners must speak with a Customer Service representative. If the owner is under the age of maturity (18 years old), the parent or legal guardian must speak with a Customer Service representative.

Stolen Bond

  • Notify your local police department, which will provide you with a report number. This number is necessary when contacting Customer Service.

Replacement process

  • A Bond of Indemnity (BofI) form will be sent to you, with instructions on how to submit the form. It will need to be completed by all bond owners and signed in the presence of a commissioner (e.g., for taking affidavits) or a notary public (e.g., lawyer, Justice of the Peace, town clerk or city hall clerk).

  • Replacement fees to guarantee the value of the loss are applicable and determined as follows:

Total Amount of Certificate(s) (including par value plus accumulated interest) $100.00 – $1,000.00 $1,000.01 – $3,500.00 $3,500.01 – $100,000.00
Fixed Price $25.00 $65.00
Percentage 2.00%

NOTE: In addition to the premium rates quoted above, a Retail Sales Tax (RST) may be applicable in certain provinces.

If you own certificate(s) where the total amount exceeds $100,000, or if you reside outside of Canada, HUB International HKMB Limited (HUB International) will assist you in finding a surety/bonding company that will provide surety services. Please note that the premium fees may differ in these cases.

Once the necessary documentation, along with the replacement fee payment, has been received by HUB International, allow 6 to 8 weeks to receive a replacement certificate(s) for your unmatured certificate(s) or a cheque for your matured certificate(s).
